| What
is Studio Grow?
Studio Grow is a clean, safe, enriching play space in Berkeley for young
children and their parents and caregivers to explore and enjoy.
Why Studio Grow?
Families in the Bay Area crave interesting, instructive activities and
social opportunities for both children and adults. Studio Grow builds
and strengthens community by providing shared experiences that inspire
and delight children's curiosity, creativity, and intrinsic desire to
learn.
What is the educational philosophy of Studio Grow?
Studio Grow believes...
...
children have unlimited potential
... children express themselves, share ideas, and better understand their
world through play
... children can make anything out of blocks, paint, clay, pencils, paper,
scissors, and imagination
... sharing experiences with adults encourages children to value creative
play, discovery, and social interaction
... there is inherent value in establishing a tone that is appropriate
for young children's social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development
... diversity should be welcomed and embraced.

Why does Studio Grow charge admission for adults?
Studio Grow is an educational play space and charges admission fees like a movie theater, an amusement park, or any other entertainment destination. The admission system - charging admission for adults and children - is the same as many Bay Area places primarily serving children, including Habitot, Bay Area Discovery Museum (Sausalito), Children's Discovery Museum (San Jose), Oakland Zoo, San Francisco Zoo, Children's Fairlyland, The Oakland Museum of California, and many more.
Unlike these places, however, Studio Grow is not a non-profit organization nor is it part of any business association providing revenue-sharing among members. It is therefore not eligible for grants, subsidies from local municipalities, free or low-cost rent, nor other sources of funding available to non-profit businesses.
This makes Studio Grow different in a very important way: 100% of Studio Grow’s ability to operate is based on admissions fees. Without the revenue generated from admissions, Studio Grow would not exist. It is therefore in Studio Grow’s best interest to provide the best possible service at a fair and reasonable price.
Studio Grow features a combination of activities in one place that families would otherwise only find through multiple providers. The play spaces, story times, music circles, tumbling and parachute play, live performances, and opportunities to connect with other families are all included in the price of admission. Admission is always good for the entire day, and children younger than one and extra adults (more adults than children ages 0 months -12 years in a group) are always free.
We understand that for some families, the cost of regular daily admission is unaffordable and we make every effort to provide opportunities for everyone to experience Studio Grow. Studio Grow Passports and Studio Grow Green Cards can provide enormous savings for those who are able to pay in advance. Even without the up-front financial commitment of Passports and Green Cards, there are multiple ways for visitors to save money. Afternoon admission is always discounted from the morning rate (current admission is $5 after 2pm) and visitors also receive a discount for walking, riding bicycles, or taking public transit to Studio Grow.
Just as the Bay Area is an expensive part of the world in which to live, it is also an expensive place in which to operate a business. Costs are incredibly high, and 90% of businesses fail in their first year. Studio Grow has been very fortunate, and with the continued support of the community, we will serve families of the Bay Area for a long time. |
